Title: Great King
Fandom: Yami no Matsuei
Characters: Hisoka, Enma
A/N: This is set in the same universe as Sigyn. It was betaed by the most wonderful [info]ravenbell.

Hisoka kept his back straight as he walked down the darkened hallway. He adjusted his tie fastidiously. It wouldn't do to arrive at this meeting any less than perfectly pressed.

He stopped at the heavy, ornate doors and nodded to the attendants who stood in front. They weren't guards. Guards would mean that the being behind the doors felt that there was something outside that could threaten him. The attendants did not return Hisoka's greeting. Instead, they just glared.

“King Enma is expecting you,” the one with a horse's face announced, barely containing a sneer.

Hisoka resisted the urge to roll his eyes. Of course Enma was expecting him. Enma had summoned him. They just want to sound important, he thought scornfully. Nevertheless, he stayed silent as the massive doors were opened. He stepped through, then looked to his side. “I can find my way from here,” he told the attendants.

“We insist on accompanying you,” said the one with an ox's head. His voice was slick and oily.

Hisoka scoffed internally. You're just dying to see me taken down a peg, aren't you?. He said nothing in response, and he kept his face as still as a Noh mask. He ignored his tag-alongs as he approached the center of the immense room. A soft light spread out from an unseen source, casting frightful shadows. In the center of the light was a resplendent throne, and sitting on the throne was what appeared to be a young man with rich robes and sleek black hair.

Hisoka bowed deeply, then knelt with one knee on the ground. “Greetings, my lord.”

“Chief Kurosaki,” Enma acknowledged. “I trust that you know why you are here.”

“Forgive me, my lord, but I must confess that I'm not sure why you felt it necessary to summon me.” Hisoka carefully avoided directly answering the question. He heard the sound of paper unfolding, and he assumed that Enma must have produced a scroll.

“There has been a complaint lodged against your employees—one Tsuzuki Asato.”

Hisoka didn't bother concealing his total lack of surprise. “May I ask what the charges are?

“Massive property damage and endangerment of mortal life.” A picture appeared in front of Hisoka, showing a sky level shopping center that had been razed. The few buildings that remained standing were smoking. “Luckily, the battle occurred at night,” Enma continued. “Otherwise it would have been a bloodbath.”

“I understand your concern, my lord,” Hisoka responded politely. “However, most of that damage was done by a demon before Tsuzuki even arrived. It's only due to his efforts that the entire city wasn't lost as well.”

“You have a rather obvious bias, Chief Kurosaki,” Enma pointed out. “How can I trust you to be objective in this?”

Hisoka didn't even blink. “I'll be glad to get you signed witness reports, if you wish, my lord, as well as documents swearing to Tsuzuki's good character.”

“I don't like you, Hisoka,” Enma said, as if the topic change were the most natural thing in the world.

“I know, my lord.” Hisoka's voice was still perfectly polite.

“You know why I don't like you.” It was not a question.

Because I give Tsuzuki some small measure of peace from the guilt and self-hatred that you use to pull his strings. “Yes, my lord.”

“And yet I don't touch you. And you know why I won't”

Because even you don't know how powerful Tsuzuki is, but you know that if you hurt me, you're going to find out. “Yes, my lord.”

“Your existence is a tenuous one, Hisoka.” Enma's expression was thoughtful.

For the first time during the meeting, Hisoka raised his head and looked Enma in the eyes. “I know, my lord. But it's mine.”

“I'll expect those witness testimonies and character reports first thing tomorrow morning, Chief Kurosaki.” Enma's tone was dimissive. “You may go. Unless--” his voice turned pleasant and cordial, which meant danger--“you have anything you wish to ask for.”

Hisoka shook his head and stood up. “Nothing, my lord.” He turned to go, but paused. “Except, if it would please your lordship, would you mind requesting that your attendants try and subdue their irritation, and their lust, when around me? It makes it more difficult to concentrate.” Hisoka turned around as Enma's attendants fumed in silent outrage. He didn't look back, but if he had, he would have seen Enma's lips curl into the smallest of smirks.

Oh, this is delightful. I've been flailing around for at least twelve hours in the hopes of saying something interesting and insightful about it, and not just going "guh" at you. But my brain is refusing, as per usual, to switch from Visual Mode to Verbal Mode on command, and I'm going to have to go with the inarticulate yum, yum, yum, and thank you for now.

I'm so glad you like it! This whole universe feels uncomfortably self-indulgent to me (which is why I'm afraid to cross-post it), so knowing that someone else got something out of it is a huge relief.

But, but! Fanfic is supposed to be self-indulgent! Up to a point, yes: I'm not going to say it's supposed to be self-indulgent in artistically shoddy ways. But I do think that the ability to go straight to the core of what's calling to you about the source is not merely what makes it fun to write (when it is fun, and not angst-inducing), but also at the core of its aesthetic qualities. Which I think it does have, as an emerging art form, even if I never seem to be organized enough to write up my argument about that.

In fact, as I think back on it not only do I feel that everything I've ever posted is uncomfortably self-indulgent, but I seem to recall that a surprisingly high percentage of the things I've been particularly impressed by, from a wide range of writers, has been accompanied by nervous little notes saying some variant of, "I don't know, this is awfully self-indulgent, but I wrote it so I suppose I might as well post it." So I think the moral is, Embrace your self-indulgence! Follow it where it leads! Just, you know, as long as you watch the edge of the cliff so you don't follow Anne Rice over the edge of it, all will be good!

I suppose that it does make sense that the things that we want to write most, the pieces that we're most connected to, would turn out especially well. Though, I then think of all of the times that that doesn't work (99% of Mary Sue fic, Ann Rice, as mentioned), and I just confuse myself.

Though I think that part of my hesitancy to post this to communities is that I feel oddly protective of it. I'm not quite sure if it's more "my universe, mine, and I'm not sharing" or a fear that people are going to go "You pitiful fool, your Hisoka is completely wrong and your universe is stupid" or perhaps a bit of both. (Though obviously I feel no ambivalence about sharing with my friends list and anyone who might happen to wander in, otherwise I wouldn't have made a public post.)

You're so reasonable and gracious. No, I mean it. The only reason I'm ever tempted to post any of my stuff to a comm is out of an evil hope that some poor unsuspecting person will come out and say, "You pitiful fool, your Hisoka is completely wrong and your universe is stupid." And then I'll get to argue with them about it.

It's like, where's the downside? If they're interesting clever people with interesting objections, I have a fun conversation and make new friends. If they're fools with silly objections like all those people who foolishly persist in thinking of Hisoka as a poor pitiful helpless ball of mush, not that I'd want to pick on anyone in particular, I can tell them how silly they're being. It's all good!

Only, also kind of evil. Which may have something to do with why I don't actually do it very often.

Hey, nothing wrong with kind of evil.

The bizarre thing is that I just remembered that someone did tell me that my Hisoka was all wrong, and my response was pretty much, "Hah! Shows what you know." (And wow, talk about a self-indulgent fic) I have no idea why I'm so bothered now.

I'll probably angst over it for a little while longer, then cross-post it without really letting myself think about it. Then I can go, "Oh my god, what was I thinking!?"

Heavens. Should I even ask who this person is, and where she made this particularly bizarre complaint? Also, where is she finding all this Hisoka-as-dom material? Because I'd like to read it, if I haven't already.

Still, I'm not sure I can take that as being primarily addressed to your individual take on Hisoka. She's telling a whole flock of us that we're wrong, wrong, wrong. Presumably she'd be bitching at all of us if she'd ever had the misfortune of stumbling into anything we'd written.

I know, I know. My first response should not be to try to go gawk at the trainwreck. But sadly, it is, it is.

Total abuse of ellipses
I have absolutely no idea who she is besides some person commenting on aff.net. As for the why... I really cannot tell you.

Also, where is she finding all this Hisoka-as-dom material? Because I'd like to read it, if I haven't already.

That's exactly what I asked! Sadly, I think I think it's merely a mixture of hyperbole and, as another person pointed out, the idea that all "uke" characters are essentially the same, so finding fic where one of them tops is like finding fic for all of them... or something. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

...It would be wrong to send her links to your Hisoka/Muraki fics, right? Very wrong.

I know, I know. My first response should not be to try to go gawk at the trainwreck. But sadly, it is, it is.

Well, that makes two of us, at least.

Re: Total abuse of ellipses
I'm tempted to tell you to do it, in the hope that she'd come argue the point with me. Probably she wouldn't, but a person can always hope.

And the thing is, I'm always curious about these (to me) really peculiar character readings. Because as you pointed out when you posted about this, I'm not sure how manga-Hisoka could be more of a dom. But other people obviously are seeing something different, and I always wonder what specific cues, other than relative height and blondness, they might be picking up that I'm discounting.

The cynic in me suspects that those cues don't actually exist. I've seen way too many people comment along the lines of, "If Hisoka was taller than Tsuzuki, then he could be on top, but since he's shorter, he can't." But then I remember that there are people I like and respect who don't see Hisoka as a top, so it can't be that simple. I think that it's easy to make it an anime vs. manga thing, but that doesn't quite work for me. I saw the anime long before I read the manga, and, subconsciously at least, it's probably what I mainly draw my interpretations from. But no one can tell me that anyone who can burst in and shoot the flames off of candles isn't awesome. (I've always liked that scene. The first rescue of the series, and it's Hisoka saving Tsuzuki.)

Well, you really surprised me with this second part. I've never expected to Hisoka in chief, but wow! You are doing a nice work, so I'm waiting for the next chapter (or piece)

Very, very nice piece. Interesting interaction between Hisoka and Enma, all polite sharp edges and subtext. Quite enjoyable.
