Minor anime update

me
Spoilers for up to episode 14 of Code Geass. Please do not spoil me beyond that. )

In other news, I have made a terrible discovery that will soon bankrupt me: my local Best Buy has a decent anime selection. Yesterday, I bought the first half of Ouran High School Host Club and the third part of Code Geass. Only, now I'm thinking that the latter may have been a bad idea. I bought the regular edition, and from looking on amazon, the special editions are looking cooler and cooler. But expensive. Well, my birthday is in about a month. I think that I'll ask for the special edition part one and see if it's worth it.

Boy, I should be in bed.

What I've been doing lately

I'm lazy- kittycatbone
Nothing, that's what I've been doing. It's wonderful. My days consist of reading, watching movies, watching anime, writing, and goofing around on the internet. Okay, once a week I go to work.

This cannot last. I should be working more hours, and I need to start volunteering at Boulder Pride, so I can get the experience. But, damn, it's great while it lasts.

I finished Avatar: The Last Airbender a while ago.

Cut for spoilers )

Afterward, my brain (as it is wont to do) went to the wacky crossover place. It started with the question, "So who would win in a fight, Aang or Merlin?" Then, I realized that they would not fight! No, they would be all-powerful, cheerful dorks together. And Zuko could be all, "I am a prince. I have Honor. And daddy issues." And Arthur would go, "Really? Do tell." But Azula and Morgana must never meet. The world would not survive.

Yes, my brain is diseased.

I've started watching Code Geass. Yes, I am very late to the party. I do that. I'm currently up to episode eight, so no spoilers beyond that, please.

Okay, possible spoilers ahead.

Cut )

I should probably leave the house today.

Saya/Tohru
I've got to get back to writing. I'm all depressed and in a funk due to losing my notebook, but I have Spring Kink stories to write, and besides, I have ideas brewing in my head.

Yesterday the CU anime club had its end of semester marathon (we stop before finals week). We finished up Claymore and Trigun (which I brought, and for me for being halfway useful), and watched individual episodes of a lot of shows. I kind of slept through some, but the ones I saw were mostly good. I'm in love with Baccano! even though I had no clue what the hell was going on when I watched it. I also really liked Ray: The Animation. (Ninja nurses! A doctor with a peg leg and an eye patch who beats people up! Another doctor with X-ray vision! This show is awesome.) I'm downloading both of those while I type. I also liked Wolf and Spice. Wagaya no Oinari-sama won me over my having an ancient character who can shape shift, and can't remember if s/he was originally a man or woman. S/he explains that as you get older, you forget these things. For a long time I've had a "Squadron of Useless Superheroes" in my head. The basic idea is that it's a bunch of people with super powers, but these super powers all happen to be pretty much worthless, such as the girl who can inject anything with caffeine. Nice if you want to stay up late, but not much good otherwise. One of the characters can change zir gender. As it turns out, all documentation such as a birth certificate ended up destroyed (not part of a villain conspiracy or anything--just bad luck), so said character doesn't remember if ze was originally male or female. Said character doesn't particularly care, either. Anyway, my point (and I do have one) is that it was amusing to see the same idea in an actual work of fiction.

Speaking of anime, can anyone recommend me some shoujo-ai/yuri/girls' love/whatever featuring adult women? Aside from Eriko Tadeno's Works (which is excellent, and everyone should pick it up), all I can think of features teenagers, usually school girls. I think I know why there's so much of that kind, but it still frustrates me. You don't have this problem with yaoi. Not that I read yaoi. Most of it is either stupid or offensive, so I prefer shoujo manga with homoerotic elements.

Shoujo-ai that I'm currently watching/reading include Tetragrammaton Labyrinth, which has one 17 (or is it sixteen?) year old and one ancient immortal that looks twelve; Venus Versus Virus, which just had a male love interest show up; and Strawberry Panic, which is the most promising. the main problems are that I can't understand why everyone is so in love with Nagisa, the main character. She's not particularly interesting, intelligent, or beautiful. In fact, she falls firmly into the "incompetent but cute" shoujo trope, which annoys me at the best of times. Even Ahiru from the brilliant Princess Tutu (please don't judge it by the name) irritated me until her character expanded. Plus, in the manga at least (I've only read the first volume and seen the first anime episode) Shizuma and Nagisa's relationship is starting to take on scary possessive vibes. (No, forbidding the person you love to be friendly with anyone else isn't romantic. It's abusive. I'm hoping that Shizuma gets over it.)

All that being said, I am enjoying the manga and looking forward to getting my hands on the second volume, and I'm willing to keep going on the anime. The two plots seem pretty different. In the anime, Shizuma is less a womanizer than she is depressed and listless. I can't decide whether anime Nagisa's tendency to faint, or at least come close to fainting, whenever Shizuma is about to kiss her is amusing or annoying though.

I have lots of homework!

a. Post a list of 10 fandoms.
b. Have your friends list guess your favorite character from each one.
c. When guessed, bold the line, include the character name, and write a sentence about why you like that character

1. Revolutionary Girl Utena- Anthy. I love Anthy, because she's the most complex character in the series--victim and victimizer, self-sacrificing and vicious, kind and cruel. She's dark, twisted, and I adore her for it. (Ok, that was two sentences.)
2. Yami no Matsuei- Hisoka. Hisoka is pure, unadulterated awesome. I love his inner strength, his courage, and the fact that he never gives up.
3. Saiyuki- Hakkai. Hakkai is an example of one of my favorite character types. He's polite, pleasant, has such a nice smile... and if you piss him off, he will end you.
4. Firefly
5. Angel Sanctuary
6. Fullmetal Alchemist
7. Sailor Moon
8. Loveless
9. Gravitation (Manga)
10. GetBackers

(For some of these, I have more than one favorite. That makes it easier to win!)

EDIT: Because it made me giggle.

spoilers )

I'm currently downloading Gankustuou. I netflixed the first disc and thought it was great. The box set is really expensive though, and I already have plenty to buy, so downloading it is. (Hey Geneon's going out of business either way.)

I'm currently eagerly awaiting the release of the Princess Tutu box set. $37.50 at amazon.com! Horray for affordable anime!

Also pondering whether or not to buy the Genshiken box set. I'm watching it at anime club and liking it quite a bit, but I have to decide if I'm going to want to watch it again.

I picked up Wild Adapter volume 3 recently. I liked a lot. (Kubota and Tokito--so gay for each other.) Unfortunately, I cannot give more detailed comments, as I cannot find my copy. Argh!

...Carry on.

Akabane will kill you
Geneon's going out of business. Shit, they have way too much anime that I still want. Luckily, I already have Lain, Trigun, Samurai Champloo, and Last Exile, but that still leaves Black Lagoon, Cardcaptor Sakura, Fushigi Yugi, Gankutsuou, Hellsing, Haibane Renmei, Kannazuki no Miko, R.O.D. TV, Saiyuki Reload (which I probably wasn't going to buy anyway, but still), and anything else I may have missed. I don't think I can afford to get all that before November 6th.

Damn.

Oh, and I have a lit test on Tuesaday. It's not going to go well.

Isaac Betrayal- sakuzou
...Though it does remind me that I have yet to finish Meine Leibe Weider.

Anyway, that's not the point.

I always mean to post my dreams, but I don't get around to it, and then I forget them. Well, here are two dreams that I remember.

In the first, I was in a hotel, trying to get to the seventh floor. Except I couldn't, because every time I tried to push the seventh floor button, I would always end up pushing another button. I could hear people (they were on the bottom floor, I was in the elevator; I don't know how it worked) wondering why the elevator was going all over the place, and I was terrified of them finding out that I couldn't even push an elevator button correctly.

Also, Kanoe and Hinoto from X were there in the hotel, only they weren't called Kanoe and Hinoto. Apparently this was before all the end of the world stuff started, and Hinoto wasn't shut up in the diet building yet, and they hadn't taken those names yet. Don't ask me how I knew all this when they were in a hotel room, and I was trapped in an elevator. It's dream logic.

I can get the meaning of that dream. It's just more of my fear of screwing up and being incompetent, and the even worse fear of people finding out that I'm an incompetent screw up. As for why Hinoto and Kanoe were there...I read too much manga.

The other I had just last night. I was at a party at my dad's, only...my dad was alive. In a wheelchair, but alive. Now, I knew something was off there. I kept thinking, "Uh, isn't he supposed to be dead?" but my mind would always shy away from the topic. The closest I got to an answer was, "Well, I guess I only thought he died." (Ya know, that doesn't seem like the kind of thing I'd get wrong.)

I remember very little aside from that. There was danger of some sort (possibly involving foreign countries). Oh, and there was college. I was stressed out because I hadn't done my homework.

I also remember that there were frozen Rice Krispie treats dipped in chocolate. These were very important. So important that when the danger was all around us, I was fully willing to take the risk of running back to the house to get some. I know I have a sweet tooth, but that's just ridiculous.

I can understand why I'd dream of my father, and messing up in school is a recurring fear of mine, but the Rice Krispie treats? I got nothing.

Oh! There's one more dream I can remember, though just the tiniest bit. I had been watching lots of GetBackers and then reading lots of Bleach before I went to bed. This lead to a dream in which Renji and Ikkaku were retrieval agents. That's all I remember. Hell, that might have been all there was.

One a completely different note (this is a random post), my writing habits have recently caused me some confusion. Like many authors, I tend to have more than one story in the works at a time. In the past I would leave a few blank pages between stories to give me room to complete the old ones, but stopped when I realized that I was leaving stories unfinished and wasting paper. Now I don't leave any space, which leads to lots of skipping around. This is all well and good, but this morning, I was looking over the third chapter of Same Plot, Different Shinigami, trying to remember what the hell I had written. It went a bit like this:

"Uh huh, Watri's is talking to Ichigo, they're going to look at the inter-universal transport device (and espresso machine) and--HOLY SHIT, when did Hisoka's cock come into this!?

"...Oh, eh heh. Different story,"

Maybe I should get another notebook for the porn

Fanish post of ultimate fanishness

School is over, and my finals are done! Whoo!

Now I just need to get a job.

I promised myself that once school was done I'd write a big fan post, so that's what this is.

First of all, I am never reading manga in public again. I keep getting weirdos. First there was the woman who prattled on and on about her painfully OOC fanfic, and then there was the guy who kept talking about his weird (and slightly illegal) business schemes. I just want to read my comic books in peace, man!

But enough about strange encounters.

Saiyuki Reload 6 )

Saiyuki Reload 7 )

Loveless 5 )

+Anima 4 )

Angel Sanctuary 19 )

I've found myself sucked into a new series, Get Backers. I'm not very far though, especially in the anime. I'm up to volume eight in the manga and episode nine in the anime.

The manga and anime are pretty much the same so far. The manga contains story arcs that the anime doesn't, and the character designs are a bit different. Hevn, for instance looks more adult and sophisticated in the anime. Also, her clothes are much, much less revealing.

Hevn and her much less revealing clothes )

Also in "changed character designs," Himiko's hair is a bit curly in the anime. Also, her skin is lighter, which disappoints me.

A big complaint I have about the manga is how much the female characters are objectified. If they're not wearing ridiculously revealing outfits, then their clothes are getting ripped off. It's infuriating. I was excited when I first saw Kazuki, because I thought we were finally seeing a female character who wasn't weak, objectified, or both. But, no, it turns out that Kazuki is a guy. (That's not a spoiler.) The anime has much less of objectification. Then again, the anime is much less realistic when it comes to blood. The manga isn't gory, but when people get cut, they, you know, bleed.

Who's my favorite? Well, I like many of the characters a lot, including Ban, Ginji, Kazuki and Himiko, but I'm quite interested in Akabane.

Pictures of Akabane smiling ever so nicely )

He's polite and pleasant, and just look at that smile! Plus, he's a doctor, so you know he has to be nice.

...Ahaha! I'm joking, of course. Naturally, he's actually a mass murderer! He kills even more efficiently than Muraki! (The Muraki in my head is now grousing about "quality over quantity.")

Akabane is quite taken with Ginji. Honestly, he's going to start comparing Ginji's eyes to gems (which might be difficult, seeing as they're brown) any episode now.

After I'd seen a few episodes and read some of the manga, I went to check out what people in the fandom were ranting about over at [info]fanficrants. What I found seemed awfully familiar. To paraphrase:

"Just because Ginji is blond and cute does not mean he can't top in bed."

"Ginji and Ban are very, very close and care about each other very, very much. If one of them starts dating someone else, he will not just forget about his partner."

"Akabane kills people for fun. He is a scary bastard, and he definitely freaks Ginji out. Please don't write fluffy bunny fic about them."

I think I'm going to feel right at home in this fandom.

Whew, I think that's all I got.

I just finished watching Princess Tutu. Uh, wow. Wow.

I actually have a bit of a history with Princess Tutu. The first time I saw the title was at fanfiction.net. I was simply scrolling past the anime/manga titles looking for whatever series I wanted fanfic for, and the words caught my eye. My exact thought was "Princess Tutu? Now there's a show I'm never going to watch." This proves once and for all that the anime gods have a sense of humor. Later I would hear Princess Tutu compared to Shoujo Kakumei Utena not once, but multiple times. I am obsessed with Utena, so any show being compared favorably to it is a must see. When my birthday came around, [info]tekararogue asked for my wishlist, and the first Princess Tutu DVD was on the list. [info]tekararogue was... surprised. I'm not exactly a "princess tutu" person. It was clear that was what she had had to get. Luckily I wasn't dependent on the DVDs or else I wouldn't nearly be done by now.

I'm feeling very sleepy. Surprisingly, this time it's not because I'm staying up all night. (I got eleven and a half hours of sleep last night.) This time, it's because of the pain medication. Yep, I'm getting my period. For those of you who have just tuned in, my periods are a miserable business. The pain leaves me whimpering, crying, and writhing on the floor. I usually throw up at least once, though my record is nine times in one day. I really got lucky today though, because I took Vicoden as soon as I could, so there was only 45 minutes of pain, and it stopped before it got to the throwing up part. The pills have worn off a bit, but it's still not very bad.

I have very little appetite lately. I'm eating, but only because I think I should eat. I've had a small bowl of oatmeal and two rolls today. I didn't want the oatmeal, and had to choke it down. I only ate it because I knew it would be a bad idea to take Vicoden on an empty stomach. I'm not sure if I should be worried about the loss of appetite. It's probably just stress.

I got my Japanese history paper back. That's the one I turned in late. I got a low B. I had four points taken off for lateness. The rest were taken because he didn't like the I cited my sources. Seriously, he took of an entire letter grade for that. It's not that I cited them incorrectly, he just wanted me to do it differently. WTF?

Sexy bastards for president!

  • Oct. 6th, 2006 at 7:23 PM
Akio's moods- jiatra
I was having a conversation with my brother last night, and we started discussing which anime characters should run for president of the United States. Obviously, we were ignoring the fact that you have to have been born in the US to qualify. We focused on sexy bastards, because it's more fun that way.

First candidate: Muraki Kazutaka.

Platform: Science and Medical reform.

Pros: Very strong health care plan. With his charisma and manners, foreign relations will skyrocket. Scientific advancements will boom.

Cons: Soft on crime.

Running mate: Mibu Oriya. Not a job I'd envy. He'll be under even more pressure to cover up Muraki's crimes, plus there's all the excuses he'll have to make when Muraki abruptly leaves the country to pursue Tsuzuki.

Biggest controversy: How will his stance on stem cell research impact his popularity with the religious right?

Second candidate: Ohtori Akio.

Platform: Education

Pros: Strongly believes in the value of education. Will encourage students to be independent and learn freely, rather than rigidly rely on standardized tests. Students will no longer have to worry about being suspended for coming to school dressed as the opposite sex. Understands that nothing is more important than family.

Cons: Will abolish just about all sex laws. No more age of consent (what kind of world is it when a 14 year old girl can't have sex with her principal?) no more outlawing incest. Has pretty much no morals or ethics.

Running mate: Kiryuu Touga. Knows his place, and more money and family connections never hurt anyone's campaign. Of course, Akio's real partner will be spin sister (as well as actual sister) Anthy. If she can't bring down his opponents down with a well placed smear campaign, she'll arrange plenty of opportunities for blackmail.

Biggest controversy: What happens when the public discovers that his family values include "Make sure she comes"?

The bottom line: I would vote for either of these two over Bush.

So, who do you think should run for president?
